Denizen Rum’s Best Cold Weather Rum Mixes

As winter approaches and frigid temperatures roll into the east coast and mid-atlantic regions of the US, we are reminded of the centuries past when rum was the drink of choice of the Northeast Colonies.

 

The tradition of rum distilling in the US was all but lost by a long list of forces that started as early as the Molasses Act of 1733 and on this Thanksgiving weekend, we want to pay homage to the rum category by offering up a couple of our favorite cold weather Denizen Rum recipes to warm the mind, body, and soul.

 

           Carnivale Hot Chocolate

           Ingredients:

  • 6 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp cane sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon Angostura bitters
  • 3 oz water
  • 12 oz whole milk
  • 8 oz Denizen Aged White Rum

 

 

Instructions: In a small saucepan, stir together the cocoa powder, sugar, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and water until they form a paste. Add the milk and place over medium heat, stirring constantly until it simmers. Remove from heat, stir in Denizen and bitters and pour into an insulated vessel. Serve warm in a mug with a cinnamon stick. Marshmallows optional.

 

Hot Apple Rum Cider

INGREDIENTS:

  • 16 oz cloudy apple juice
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1.5 oz cane sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 green cardamom pods
  • 2 star anise pods
  • .5 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • Quarter of a vanilla bean
  • ¼ teaspoon Angostura bitters
  • 4 oz Denizen Aged White Rum

 

Instructions: 
 Add all ingredients except Denizen to a saucepan or crock pot and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until hot. Strain into an insulated container or pot, stir in Denizen, and garnish with more cinnamon sticks.
