Drink Recipe: Merchant’s Remedy

Throughout the Caribbean, at nearly every beach bar, restaurant and rum shack, sweet tropical drinks are a mainstay. Popular ingredients like fruit juices, lime, coconut cream, bitters and, of course, rum are common. Different variations on these traditional island cocktails are numerous and everyone seems to have their favorite mix. For us, most of these “beach drinks” are a bit too sweet and the rum is overpowered by the rest of the ingredients. But if you use a rum with a bold flavor profile, these cocktails take on a completely new dimension.

imageDenizen Merchant’s Reserve was designed to stand out in a variety of cocktails and in tropical drinks it does just that. The funky pot still flavor combines well with fruit juices and sweeteners. We decided to give it a go in a drink from the Virgin Islands that combines pineapple juice, orange juice, coconut cream and ground nutmeg. At last, this popular drink has met a rum that can stand up to the rest of its sweet ingredients. We’ve called this one the Merchant’s Remedy and we think that it’ll put you in a very happy and pain free state of mind. As always, give this one a try and let us know what you think.

Merchant’s Remedy
2 oz. Denizen Merchant’s Reserve
4 oz. pineapple juice
1.5 oz. cream of coconut
Splash of orange juice
Ground nutmeg

Combine rum, juices and coconut cream in an ice filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until chilled. Pour over ice into a tall glass and add fresh ground nutmeg. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.
