June 3, 2015

Or maybe you would consider the endless number of tiki drinks that have been created and popularized over the years to be the cocktails that define the category. For a growing number of craft cocktail enthusiasts, however, the El Presidente might be right at the top of the list. This unique drink was created in Cuba around 1920 and became a favorite of American tourists who traveled regularly to the island for boozy holidays during Prohibition.

imageThe original El Presidente had only four ingredients, rum, dry vermouth, curacao and grenadine. Of course, after nearly a hundred years of tweaking, several popular variation have come to light. Our favorite is by bar consultant and mixologist Josh Goldman. His riff on this classic combines all of the traditional ingredients and adds lime juice and sugar. This simple twist adds a whole new layer of complexity that will go over well with anyone who appreciates the original. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
