The Negroni is a popular drink that dates back to 1920 and remains a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts across the globe. It’s simple to make with just three ingredients in equal parts (gin, sweet vermouth and Campari) yet sophisticated enough to scare away more than a few non-believers. Many variations of this classic have been created over the years but few of them capture the distinct character of the original.
Though replacing gin with rum in a Negroni is nothing new (we’ve been enjoying this recipe for a number of years) it takes the right rum to do the drink justice. Our 8 year aged Merchant’s Reserve Rum has a bold flavor profile that was created for one of a kind cocktails and we think it stands up perfectly to the Negroni test. It mingles well with the other ingredients and gives the drink an added complexity, somehow without completely stealing the show. Our favorite recipe stays true to the theme of the original and calls for equal parts rum, Campari and vermouth, but be creative and see what formula you like best.
